They hurried from the park, arguing as they went deep into the city. They thought they knew where their interest might take them and what risk was involved. Lisa’s worst fear at this point was that their year’s worth of research might be for nothing if they could not find good proof, or if they were caught. Rusty knew that they might be arrested for trespassing, forgery…or worse. They thought grimly to themselves as the traffic lights and unending traffic streams flowed over black pavement: was a successful career worth the risk? The pair had not even begun to scratch the surface.

Within a second she had broken free of the trap and begun to near the road just outside the park. There was one thing Lisa could count on in New York: there were enough policemen, about at any given time, to occupy a small country. She just needed to find the right crosswalk and pull a man in blue back to the park with her. Escape was not enough; she wanted the men to be caught and to have to explain themselves. She also worried about Dylan. The disgruntled voices of stockbrokers, brushing by her running legs, filled her ears on the white sidewalk as she ran.
